AnonTalk BBS

Dashboard

You may enable/disable/tune miscellaneous features/settings here. Please understand that randomly checking boxes without properly reading and understanding what you are doing could change your "AT experience" in a very negative way. Some options are only available for regulars or long-timers. It is a good idea to take your time to read through these options and check back from time to time.

This affects multi-page sections such as "Topics", "Replies" and "Bumps". One possible reason for wanting to lower this variable could be to waste less data traffic.

How much horizontal screen real estate can you afford to waste on those "snippets" around the board?

You may pick a different visual appearance. Beware that most of these alternative looks are currently ugly and "unsupported".

You most likely don't want to set this to anything but "automatic" unless you have a very high-resolution screen. It will cause the horizontal width of the layout to be fixed (center-aligned) to the given value of pixels.

The "ReplaceThisWithYourOwnText" text will not be shown when citing replies and in some other situations. This was added by request of people who use handheld devices which make it bothersome to delete text. (It is written like that to be easily selectable by most people, and the reason for it to exist at all is to prevent "top posting" where people write the reply before the quote/cite.)

An extra button is shown when composing a new post, allowing you to mass-quote every line of what you pasted. Useful when you are often quoting external sources, such as news stories.

All external links (in posts, polls, etc.) will be followed by "[P]" which is a hyperlink going to a random external Web proxy (Anonymouse.org being one of them) which will open the Web page without the destination server knowing about you. This can be useful when opening "dangerous" or "suspicious" addresses and can also help you bypass your ISP's (very possible these days) censorship. Note: Any advertisement shown on the "landing page" are not ours, but added by the proxy service. This mode will not affect the "media" feature. Some Web resources, such as video streams, will not work because they use plug-ins such as Flash.

No "History", "Trash can" or "Mine only" (under "Polls") links will be shown to you, no drafts will be saved, you won't see what you answered on polls or which bulletins you posted, you can't see personal statistics, no indicators will tell you which posts are yours in topics, private messages will be immediately destroyed when read, etc. Not recommended since this makes the board significantly less useful, but could potentially be useful to some paranoid, computer-sharing AnTs. (A better solution would be to always lock your computer when you are away from it. In somewhat modern versions of Windows, for instance, this is easily done by pressing WinKey and L at the same time. Be sure to actually set up a password first, though.)

Topics with headlines matching your personal ignore list will be silently censored to you in the "Topics" and "Bumps" sections. The same will happen to polls in the "Polls" section. Very much NOT RECOMMENDED; exists only because it was so heavily requested, to shut those people up.

This is like "ostrich mode", except you don't get to decide what is censored. Also, "controversial" advertisements (currently 0) are blocked. Overrides "ostrich mode". anontalk.com/SFW automatically enables "Safe For Work" mode for new visitors.

If you don't want to use SFW mode, you can use this (typically together with "ostrich mode") to prevent any "controversial" ads (currently 0) from showing.

Causes snippets of the topic bodies to appear in the "topics" section. Useful for spotting trolls more easily.

Causes an extra checkbox to appear where you post, which needs to be checked before you will be allowed to publish anything. This is useful if you find yourself accidentally submitting the form prematurely for some reason, possibly due to a real medical condition.

A special mode for "special" people. Will cause the board to practice the "classic" (and stupid) AT post publishing behaviour, which was changed by default due to the way it seemed to discourage proof-reading, previewing and spell checking before posting. It was also inefficient, wasteful and made it easy to miss other new replies. It is highly recommended that you keep this disabled, but the option is kept for those who just can't let go of the old way. Important: Using this mode does not exclude you from the requirement to proof-read, spell check and generally preview your posts before publishing them; this has always been the case. Use at your own risk.

Upon citing a reply, while composing your reply, you will see the entire post printed on top as a "reference". If you don't cite any reply, the topic post will be shown instead. Not enabled by default because it looks very awkward combined with the preview. Also, topics that aren't your own get a "Forget" link so that you may "forget" the visit if you wish. Both were added by request.

Causes the "Hot", "Shuffle", "Events" and "FAQ" links to disappear from the main menu. Instead, they will be available to you in the "Stuff" section.

For "power users". Currently only modifies the main menu, but will most likely do more things in the future. "[+]" links will appear in the main menu next to the "Topics", "Polls", "Bulletins" and "Events" items for going directly to the "new X" pages. The "New topic" item is removed since it becomes redundant. Goes well with "mini menu mode".
