Topic: Read a book in just one day?

Anonymous fa427d804e975f19b225ca3ad27f7c40 started this discussion 3 months (2008-08-26 18:31:28 UTC) ago:

Some people claim that this is possible and that they do it. I think it's bullshit. They simply cannot properly read a book in such short time. It takes me weeks or months to finish one…

I've read several books in one day. What's so great about it?

That just means you aren't good at reading, so stop posting crap.

Simply not possible. Stop lying.

Simply possible. It just takes about 8 or 9 hours to finish a 400 page book (normal difficulty, like Catcher in the Rye, or Clive Barker).
Some people read faster than others, so you might be a slower reader

8 hours and 400 pages = 72 seconds per page, with absolutely no breaks…

I normally need 50 seconds per page, aka having about 20 lines, meaning 2.5 seconds a line. That's joyful reading though, I can go faster if needed.

Just saw that I did one third of Stephen King's the Gunslinger in about 3 hours. So it really isn't that hard to finish a book in a day. Just need some time for that.

You are not actually reading the book…

It is more of a fly through, if it gets interesting I read a part twice. But its enough to understand the book. If it's a schoolbook, its normally enough to score a 90% on a test about it.

I can easily read a 400-500 page book in a day, and I do it from time to time when I get unemployed and such.
So to answer the OPs question, it's most definitely possible.

It's definitely possible, I've done it on many occasions with ~500 page books. Sure, it might take up most of the day, but it's still possible. I can comprehend it too, so it's not like were just fucking breezing through every sentence and paragraph.

Please realize that it is possible to read a book in a day.

I read the whole "Kite Runner" book in one day, because it was a school book, and I knew if I put it down I wouldn't finish it because it sucked horrible, so I read it in one day.
The next day, I read Slash's autobiography in that day. It takes up your whole day if you read a big book in one day.

I used to read Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms books at a rate of about 1.5 to 2 a day over the summer back in high school, and they have 300-350 pages on average. No offense, OP, but you remind me of the type of person who's so stupid that he thinks everyone else must be stupid as well.

20 lines… 20?
There's the answer right there, those are children's books. Try some Asimov, Rand, Tolstoy, or Steinbeck, kid.

I was wrong alright? I just took a number out of my head and wrote it down. Just noticed that most books I read have twice or three times as many lines as that.

I can do a page in 50 seconds, and yes I am 'reading' the book, it doesn't strains me at all and I can remeber everything. It's just a question of practice. I read at least 4 books per month and spend a lot of time reading on the internet - you get faster with time.

Well, I can read extremly fast. SOme days ago I read 2 books, 350 pages each in about 10 hours. Those were youth books, but still pretty dense.

If I scan instead of reading, I can scan one A4 page in 1 minute. I do this in class and I hate that most people need about 3 times the time.

Everytime a new Terry Goodkind book came out, I would read the whole thing on the same day. More than possible, most people heavy into reading can read quickly. Fountainhead took me two days though, Rand's writing style is a bit more abstract and wordy. We the Living was about 4 hours if I remember.

As I said in the other thread about this, it's pretty obvious you've never been to grad school. You're very often required to read 500-600 pages in one day and have an educated enough opinion to lead a discussion the next morning. Reading is not difficult, especially if the material happens to interest you or if the author's writing style melds well with your method of reading.

For example, I read the unedited version of the Stand (which clocks in at a concise 1141 pages) in a couple days a few weeks ago because Stephen King's writing style works for me. By comparison, I've never read a full Chuck Pahlaniuk book in a day because his writing style hurts my head and is usually too filled with ambiguity making it hard to fully grasp what he's talking about. Try reading Fight Club without having seen the movie or reading Invisible Monsters. Ugh. I like Chuck, but that guy deliberately tries to mess with your head.

Lord of the Rings, 2 days, lots of breaks, not in my native tongue. Read Wheel of Time series in 2 weeks, thats nearly a book a day, but i was visiting family and stuff too then. I've never tried to read fast or check how much i can read in a day, but i did read a 500 page book in my language when i was 11. And yes, i do remember what i read.

The Silmarillion, four days, reading only on half hour lunch breaks and maybe two hours a night before bed. Re-read at a later date in two days. I don't 'try' to read fast, though. I could.
