Topic: So… in "Fresh Prince", does Will Smith play himself?

Anonymous 43267c30a37915f213475193200b3269 started this discussion 3 months (2008-08-28 14:55:53 UTC) ago:

He has the same real name as the character that he is playing. Is he supposed to be himself? What other reason could there be for picking that name for the character inside the show? Is the show supposed to be based on his actual life (back then)?

Will Smith plays Will in like 80% of the stuff he's in. And most of that is Will Smith.

The character was named Will for several reasons. Firstly because the actor had little acting experience prior to that and was honestly pretty bad in the beginning, so they made it easier for him to follow the script by not having to remember which character he was. Secondly, Will Smith was a rising star at the time as both a rapper and an actor, so sharing a name the character helped cultivate his fan base. And finally, many of his lines were ad-libbed and semi-autobiograhical, even if the actual plot wasn't.
