You breathe… what? Are they synonyms?

Pure oxygen will kill you. Air is made up of mostly Nitrogen, some Oxygen, a tiny bit of carbon dioxide and a lot of trace gasses.

Oxygen is a chemical element. "Air" is just a name given to the various gases which permeate our atmosphere.

@57,417

Is there no scientific term for "air"?

Atmosphere is what most would consider 'air'.

Depending on the planet body, 'air' can be Earthlike or something toxic to humans but still 'air' nonetheless.

And air is not a compound, but a mixture, since the elements of the atmosphere don't actually bind together, they just coexist in the same place.

The Oxygen you breath is a diatomic Oxygen molecule, two Oxygen atoms joined together. You cannot breath pure Oxygen as it would kill you.

Air is the mixture of chemicals that makes up a planet's atmosphere. Earth's air is a mixture of Argon, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide, and other stuff. Nitrogen is about ~75% of the air, while Oxygen is only ~20%.

On a funny note, while I was browsing the web today, I saw an ad for canned oxygen. Apparently, in Japan, they buy those and inhale it. It's mostly 90% pure oxygen. Wtf?

That's the Japanese for you. This is not the weirdest stuff they have ever made.
