I think the shoe is Vista or something. A quality commodity that seems tough at first.

It's a personality/emotional sell, aimed against Apple's PC character. They diminish the effectiveness of Apple's advertisements by not talking about features, while reselling the Windows personality.

The ad is watchable, as Gates and Seinfeld are interesting characters and the upbeat pace is maintained. I am a Mac user since 84, but I think this approach is not the worst one they could have taken. There is no real strong point to Windows (compared to the Mac) except that it's a commodity.

I think it's much too subtle. It suffers from a common problem in commercials today, in that most people watching it have no idea what it's actually selling.

I remember a stand-up comedian joked about this; I'm thinking along the lines of Jerry Seinfeld though since this commercial could be a subtle reference to it but I'm still not sure. I remember the stand-up act was joking about how rich people always wasted all their money on expensive items and eventually go broke, and then the comedian goes "look at Bill Gates, he's the richest man in the world and he still looks like he works at the shoe store!".
