At least in my country, old Donald Duck magazines (and possibly new ones, but I think not) are full (in the bottom of each page) with little kids wanting pen pals. I wonder how many pedophiles/little girl/boy lovers used to exchange letters with those kids back then… I mean… you get no picture until possibly at best the first reply. And it's a lot of work. Seems tedious and expensive, but then again, receiving a physical letter from a cute loli who has attached a photograph of herself and who talks about how much she likes horsies must be a great feeling…
Also, I found one eight-year-old girl's ad from 1984 that I just read hilarious: Her name, address and only one piece of information: "Interests: General." ^_^

They still have pen=pal things in girl's magazines. I used to get a magazine called GL (aka Girl's Life, and yes I am a girl and not a pedo) where they would advertise pen pals. I assume they still do that.

I always find it funny that so many people - especially parents ofc - are going absolutely apeshit if they see kids chatting on the web, or on MSN, because they think they're practically advertising themselves to get snatched up & raped. While those things can be easily checked & moderated by parents. So many young kids will have had it up the pooper from a 'same-age pen pal' but always kept their yaps shut because they were told to by their abusers, and their parents never found out because physical letters don't leave .txt logs.
