I consider these words extremely important in all of society. Humans are built to take these are forms of payment for freely offered services (for example, finding out some information for a friend), and yet so often people forgo the simple task of saying these short phrases.
I'm often called polite because I use these words (when appropriate), but really I think that everyone should use them a lot more, because being shown gratitude is very rewarding and is definitely deserved for someone who has worked hard on another's behalf. Discuss.

I find these words hard to work in sometimes, but I always try to anyways. It's nice to hear these words from someone you care about. The only thing that I'm unsure about, is wither or not it is worth saying these phrases in day to day conversation; in business confrontations… It seems like everyone uses them with strangers that do them a business service, and so they now have little meaning in that area. I think it is also highly dependent on where you live. For example, try using these words in New York, to someone who works at a McDonalds. They would most likely give you a very cold and dark stare. However, If you didn't use them, around where I live, it would be considered impolite.

I don't really use them too much. If I ask someone to do something for me, it's usually "Hey, could you […]" followed by "Thanks."
Anything more than that seems stiff to me.
