Now let's pretend that the world someday will become an atheistic world. Would these still be apart of human speech? "God Damn It," "Dear Lord," etc or will it be like South Park and humans will say, "Science Damn It," and "Science Be Praised!?" This is someone I am just wondering about. What do you all think?

Maybe. A lot of archaic expressions are still around.

It will take a long time before those phrases are gone completely. I don't think society will go atheist, i think both atheists and religious people will become agnostics, and agnostics can use "God" in their phrases either out of hope or jest or love of tradition.

I could actually seeing "Science be praised" and "Damn Science" become common terms of expression. If more of our society becomes more and more reliant on science then our vocabulary will reflect that.

Well, I'm an athiest, and I use terms like "I swear to god" and things of that nature.
Not because they have meaning, but because they're just sayings.
Usually when people say that, they're not actually swearing to their god. ;]

@58,112In what context? Sex, or fearing for your life? Sex = "Oh yes oh yes oh yes!" Fear = "Oh shit oh shit oh shit!"
As I pointed out above, I believe that we'd simply drop religious terms from our vocabulary. Seeming as science is not something we worship and deify, it would not take the place of the usage of "god" in our language. "God damn it" would become simply "damn it", "I swear to god" would be "I swear", and so on and so forth.

@58,101No, I doubt that. We wouldn't worship science, those phrases would be ridiculous. Think about the context in which we most usually use these God phrases in. Most of them involve us "praying" or "wishing" something from God.

@58,186Exactly!
To the common man science will turn more and more into magic, since they won't be able to understand it.
That's assuming something radical in the education sector doesn't change.

i am an atheist and I still say god damn it and phrases like that 6 years after switching
i think "god damnit" would stick around for a couple of generations and then we would just change the types of exclamations we say, as we have from people in the late 1700s and so on
vernacular changes over time

@58,194I guess you're right; if science eventually becomes more like "magic" and people fail to comprehend it, there would be similar God phrases. However, I don't think it would be as retarded as "science be praised."

@58,330But how does Science become magic? How could something else come along to replace it? How is this possible? Because it seems as if Science is that thing that pretty much as replaced religion and other "mystic" things. Science just as if it would advance more and not be replaced. Now perhaps early versions of science could be replaced.

Even if belief in god vanishes the idea of god will remain forever. God dammit will still be used, i am atheist i still sue god expressions because they still have meaning, just not literally.

@58,332Science is a really general term, so it's not the best word to use here. The best way to put it is scientific machines or processes can become magic if the
science itself is forgotten. A computer can be magic if someone doesn't understand the science of computers. A car can be magic if someone doesn't understand the science of cars. It's the basic lack of understanding which causes the magic.
However, computers and cars can become mundane and un-magical if we are exposed to them long enough. After a length of time, people would realize that computers and cars aren't so magical, and that there's an underlying "something" governing it's operation. Whether or not these people attribute the "something" to a machine spirit or a set physical laws is another question.
