What's the deal with either never pressing Enter (resulting in a "wall of text") or abusing that key, making the posts look generally ugly?

i'm assuming it's because AT doesn't word-wrap? Or does it, i'm not sure. People assume that it automatically get's wrapped, like it does in the reply box.

The largest part of the problem, for people who are not idiots, is that we cannot preview posts. Typing in the text box is awkward (since the font sizes and visible area are not the same) and typing in an external editor is often too inconvenient. Also, people often add whitespace in order to provide logical separation in their posts. It is annoying to see orphaned sentences, but it is more annoying to see sentences appended to paragraphs where they do not really belong. Both reduce readability.
Of course, a very well-written exposition can avoid these quandaries, but there would be serious diminishing returns with respect to post quality versus valuable content if posters were required to create grammatically ideal essays for each post.
