I live in rural Australia and have a satellite Internet connection, which has a pretty good speed, but shit all in the way of monthly downloads. I get 500MB a month, which I can totally survive on, but am always accidentally loosing track of how many MB I have downloaded any one day. What I'm after is some sort of software that would allow me to cap my connection to 16MB every 24 hours, do any of you guys know of such a solution?

Your service provider might provide a service that manages your internet usage. Ours does, which is how we maintain our usage without going over.

No luck there. They do provide a record of how many MB I have downloaded each day, but it does not show how many I have used _this_ day, it's only as up to date as yesterday. And this crappy "usage status" page is buried through a shit load of links and passwords and takes about 5 minutes to check.

I once tried setting a speed limit for my connection, to make it harder to go over 16MB a day. But it was impractical and a total pain in the ass.
