I've got a pc that seems to randomly shut down without warning. it's been doing this for about six months. sometimes it is useless to try to use it for five minutes, other times it can run for days. any ideas?

specs:
Motherboard: ASUS A7N8XX
NFORCE 2 100 Chip Set
CPU: AMD Athlon 1.4 ghz
RAM: 1.5 ghz DDR
Video: nVidia GeForce 7600GS 512 MB AGP card

I have ruled out overheating and any software since I tried wiping the hard drives. The power supply, processor, cd rom and video card have been upgraded since the problem started, so it can't be those either. I have checked for errors in the windows log files and found none. when it does shut down, you have to disconnect the power supply for a while before you can turn it back on. i've also ruled out any electrical problems with the house, my other pc works fine in the same outlet.
so i've tried everything except replacing the motherboard, could that be the problem? might end up replacing the whole damn thing.

Really sounds like dirt or dust in the fan causing the processor to overheat…

Definitely try cleaning out your fan. Dust can build up in it, causing it not to be able to spin. My computer eventually stopped powering on entirely until I opened up the case and sprayed the fan with compressed air. Took 30 seconds.

Anyone else think the site would be better off without the sysop?

You know why the sysop won't let people say 4_chan it's to hide the fact that he spams it all the time!

like i said, overheating isn't the issue. i've checked the cpu temp several times after it shuts down and it's always in the norm.
there was a fire in the house last winter. afterwards i had to use a whole can of air duster.. the whole thing was filthy and covered in soot. the heat sink was the worst and i had to remove it to get all the filth out of it, but it's pretty clean now and it gets cleaned regularly. also, the cpu fan occasionally makes funny noises and i'm sure it needs replacing, but still, the temps always seem to be in the safe zone. i've also disabled auto shut down in the bios if the temperature does get too high, so the processor would probably fry before it shut down over that.
