Or does it perhaps… promote it? I really have no firm opinion on this matter. In general, I would assume that it prevents more rapes than it promotes, but that's just a "gut feeling" and not backed by any kind of evidence/science…
Has this been "tested"? If so, how exactly did they do the test? And when?

It increases rape.

It decreases rape.
For instance, Japan lolicon art has decreased child rape, because as you know, most of paedophiles are opportunistic one (i.e. if they have the opportunity to have sex with a child, they will, but they won't take insane risks to create this opportunity), so if there's some substitute material available, they're more likely to ease their urge on it, rather than risk the true thing.
wikipedia should provide you the figures about this topic.

How about men just learn some fucking self-control.

@66,702If you weren't a retard, you would know that :
1/ Women can also rape. 10% rate in USA, but well, men are even less eager to report rape than women, so we may reasonably think the figure is higher.
2/ It's not about self-control. Rapist don't go after the prettier girls/boys out there, there is some chemical issues involved. That's why more than 10% of rape victims get raped again in the 10 following years by another perpetrator, there is probably a complex hormonal reaction at stake there (in short : raped women smell like raped women), but well, it's not easy to study.
3/ Rape is also believed to be a reproduction specy strategy, thus unavoidable with our actual state of knowledge (maybe in the future, we'll be able to spot potential rapists and treat them with pills)

It's a common mistake to think releasing feelings/urges will make them go away. This believe it based on the therories of Freud, who said you should never suppress feelings, because if you do so, they will eventually take control(catharsis theory).
But modern science has proven it's quite the contrary.
For example, when you are angry and let out your anger by breaking something, you will feel better. But this good feeling does not decrease your anger, it increases in fact.
It's the same for sexual desires.
Looking at porn will not decreas your sexual urge or stop you from raping someone.
BUT I seriously doubt anyone will go on a rape rampage because of looking at too much porn. I don't think rapists are just ordinary, horny guys (/gals), but seriously disturbed individuals. But when you tend to be aggressive and abusive AND look at a lot of porn, I'd say you are more likely to cross the last line and actually rape somone.
Ugh, so in short:
Porn + healthy person = no prob
Porn + emotionally disturbed = risky

Rape isn't about sex, it's about power.
Regular porn isn't normally about power. I bet, though, that a number of rapists had a collection of hard bdsm-style stuff.

I think it neither promotes nor prevents it. Rapists aren't normal people, but seriously deranged individuals.

Rape predates porn. Rape won't turn a regular joe into a rapist. That's just a cop out.

@66,851Yea, I don't know where this comes from. Something invented to make victims feel less violated? If it were only about power, why does it involve sex? It's about sexual dominance and deriving pleasure from violating others sexually, not a vague sense of "power".
