Topic: Sega apparently to launch a "PSP killer" in 2009

> Sega will next year launch a portable media player boasting enough functionality to threaten Sony’s PlayStation Portable, the Register Hardware can exclusively reveal.
>
> The PMP is to be called the Sega Vision and it’ll work as a videogames machine, in addition to playing films. The unit will feature an integrated camera for capturing still images and video. A built-in TV tuner will provide yet another form of entertainment.
>
> Sega Vision may also threaten Sony’s Reader range of e-book viewers, because books are listed as one of Vision’s features. The Sega PMP will also handle music and work as a voice recorder.
>
> Sadly, none of the machine’s technical specifications have been revealed yet, such as which music formats it’ll support, whether there’ll be on-board storage or how many megapixels the camera will have.
>
> Sega told us that Vision will be launched in the UK at some point early next year, but a price hasn’t been set yet.
>
> However, if you like what you've heard, then a handful of working models – believed to be the only ones in existence in the UK – are currently sitting in a central London arcade waiting to be won.

They don't seem to actually link to any kind of source, and the YouTube video that they link to has been "removed by the user". Hmm…

Even if this is true, it pretty much feels like the new Commodore 64 hardware: It's just a legendary brand name that a lot of people associate with something good being used for generic hardware without the "soul and spirit" of the original company… :-(

How can you kill something that's already pretty much dead? The PSP is far from successful, so it wouldn't be too great of an accomplishment if Sega was able to overtake them. I guess it's a little bit of revenge in the name of the noble Dreamcast slaughtered by the PS2, though I don't see Sega ever becoming profitable in consoles again, handheld or not.

I agree. It'd be cool though, they could finally do another Sonic game for an in-house developed console, and hopefully return to form.

According to the most recent numbers PSP has sold 38.6 million units worldwide. That puts it almost six million units ahead of the Wii. The system has had a very strong 2008, and has a third model waiting in the wings to be launched, which will further drive sales. And you think it's "dead". Clearly this is an area of your expertise.

Sega won't get back into hardware.

Let's not forget, Sega is owned by Nintendo. I hear no discussion of Nintendo helping, managing, funding, etc for the project.

Though, Gizmodo, TheRegister, and many other sources swear by it. So, who knows?

You haven't heard? The two companies formed to make one super company, kind of. So now, Sonic is as much Nintendo's as Mario is Sega's.

Am I right, guys?

Sega was never bought by Nintendo. It merged with Sammy to form Sega Sammy Holdings. It does work more closely with Nintendo more than most other video game companies, though, which is probably why the new system isn't being called a "DS killer".

They were making a multimedia hand-held rather than a gaming device.
