Where the hell did people get ideas like…
-Drinking milk ("I'm just gonna grab this here thingy and drink the white crap that comes out of it!")
-AIDS came from monkeys
etc.
Bonus points if you can post more examples. I'm trying to compile a list.

Who first tasted alcohol and thought "hey, this tastes great!" before they actually felt any of the pleasurable effects? Who decided to put it in their mouth after smelling it?

@66,923Fermenting water to produce water containing alcohol was the only way to ensure drinking water was clean for years.

@66,932Do you mean the alcohol would serve to sterilize?
Also, how do you ferment water if it has no sugar?

Who saw the coffee bean and thought:
I'm gonna 1: roast this thing 2: Grind it up 3: Run water over it and 4: Drink the brown stuff.

Who first waded into the water, or was walking near the shore, and saw a lobster or crab…then seeing this hideous mud-bug, with its insectoid legs and horrifying claws, its fly-like oozing mouth and empty, black eyes on the ends of long eyestalks like some nightmare vision from the fertile mind of H.P. Lovecraft, though to themselves…
THAT LOOKS DELICIOUS.

It seems like most of these probably arose from people being creative out of necessity. i.e. "there's no food around, kill and eat whatever moves or looks like it won't kill me because I'll die if I don't eat it anyway!"

@66,954That would be the guy who got sick of the sludge from just grinding raw beans and mixing the granules with water. I remember seeing some PBS/History/Discovery/BBC documentary on the origins of coffee, was origionally a replacement for coke leaves or something, since someone found he got energy off chewing the beans. Add in not needing to put lime in your mouth to activate the coke, and the coffee bean took off.
God bless the americas for coffee and chocolate.
