I was born with down syndrome and find the constant use of the word "retard" on this forum offensive.

I find your use of this forum, as a lesser human being, offensive.
See? It works both ways.

I was not born differently-abled in any way, but feel the same way. I also don't like the use of the word "gay" to mean bad, or the rampant use of the words "nigger" and "fag" all over the internet. It's hard to argue against these things though, because many people jump to calling you overly PC or a baby, and (forgetting about those people who use these terms because they ARE bigots, through and through) otherwise good intentioned, intelligent, tolerant people become a little self-righteous and full of themselves as they mock you for complaining, a la those Libertarian fools at South Park.
There is, I think, an argument in favor of using these terms, however. I don't subscribe to it though, and feel many people who argue against me on this subject seem to have given it no actual though and are simply doing what is easiest for them and requires the least change in their vocabulary, pretending it is an actual opinion they have on the subject. I'd love to hear some serious discussion this, here.

Well maybe the problem is that the word "retard" is built into this board, said several times in help messages, more times in error messages, etc. Why not rename Retardchan to failchan or 4ailchan. That's what 7chan uses.

When somebody uses racist language, I don't see them as being racist. They usually dislike somebody, see what stands out, colour of skin? Weight? Bald? Big ears? Then use the easist insult. With the vast amount of racist jibes and the PC culture its an easy choice to go for calling somebody by their colour of their skin.
I think youll find people who are racist, are proud to be racist. Those who just use the language of a racist are a victim of society.

@66,959I would agree with your final point, if anything. I do not support use of words like "nigger" and "fag" as insults, and "gay" or "retarded" as representing anything negative, but I do not think people who use these terms are necessarily bigots, or in the wrong. Even those who argue for it and say I'm too PC, I do not think they are attempting to be offensive, or that their intention is to hurt others. I agree that they are victims of a society that in many ways allows and condones racism, sexism, homophobia, etc., in small, acceptable ways. Society tells you that the rapist or pedophile is a deviant; someone whose mind is not like yours, and therefore you could NEVER be that person. At the same time younger and younger girls are being sexualized in media, and all of the aesthetics of beauty in our culture are meant to mimic youth. This does not mean that rape and pedophilia are at ALL okay; they are crimes that are morally repugnant. But we must remember that this person isn't some 'evil' villain, but rather a person just like you who made the wrong moral choice. You must also think about these things. The same goes for race or sex. The man who beats or murders his wife, or who is the Law&Order-style over-the-top sexist, or the crazy racist who drags someone behind his truck, are made to seem like impossibly inhuman lunatics far removed from a normal person. This helps justify a normal person's 'normal' level of racism or sexism or homophobia. "I mean I'm not KILLING them, I just feel a little bit like black people are a bit dumber, or women are weaker, or gay people are kind of gross. Just a LITTLE."
It's a trick of society, I agree.

I'm gay and I do find hearing "fag" pretty offensive, and when the topic has nothing to do with homosexuality I find it idiotic too. I feel the same way about "nigger". "Retard" I'm not sure about because these days it mostly indicates a stupid person; a person born with mental problems is not first in my mind when I hear it.

@66,958I think we should just call it 4chän. I mean, for a place that is supposed to be more mature and intelligent than them, it's kind of ironic to resort to something THEY would do, degrading something by injecting "fag" or "retard" into the name, and we can still hate them and still use the correct name of their site. Especially when we allow names like 7chan to be used. They're just as "bad" as any other chan out there, yet we only censor the name of 4.

@67,016You know, I actually agree
Making rules will only provide them with ways to break it
Those who come here to troll will just find ways to overcome it
But those who are regulars here who accidentally post it will get shit thrown at them
Why not just allow the words, but either ignore or delete the posts. Seems much less 'tempting' for trolls

Is having lesser intelligence a good thing? No? Then it's still a fucking insult. I'm sorry fate was so callous as to bestow you with genetically hampered intelligence via down's syndrome, but "retard" still means "unintelligent," and no matter how you slice it, that's a bad thing.
Don't take it personally. All of nigger-controlled society hates White people, and I let a majority of slurs against the White Race roll off. Everyone takes shit from somebody.

Wow welcome to real life. In this world, we've got an offensive word for just about everyone. Grow up and get over it.
Words are cheap, anyone and everyone can and will say whatever they feel like. Whomever gets hurt by a few letters has a personal problem.

Words DO have power. Words are the way we communicate ideas, and your "good intentions" or attempts at humor do no overpower the actual meaning of the words. To act like it means nothing, and that many of the people online who constantly say "gay" as being bad are not, in many ways, homophobic is a bit naive. TOLERATING someone while making offensive jokes and complaining "Too PC! Wuss!" if anyone CALLS you on the actual meanings of the words you are spewing does not mean you are NOT a bigot. As I said before, it's more than just beating someone who is different; being a bigot is also about that person's quality of life, and how you treat them. So what, if you think you are good enough and you TOLERATE so many people? So you don't KILL them…your words still have meaning and you still, in your daily life, feel that GAY people are a negative. BLACK people are bad. Women are weak. You use these words, this is the position you are putting forth into the world. It is a political position that you are verbalizing and representing yourself with, whether you consider yourself political or not. The words have meaning, and the outcry against this being "too PC" still feels, to me, like a cop-out so you don't have to do any self-examination or work to help minority groups that are not treated equally. People who say things like "gay" or "nigger" all the time and DON'T think they have ANY homophobia, racism, or bigotry in them need to stop and think about how true that is.

Tough luck Downie, that's the internet for you.
Actually, I am offended by the word "bigoted", which would imply me pretending to be religous.
