I just read online that a book about the wife of a religious figure (Aisha, I think) is ABOUT to be released, so given that they wouldn't have had a chance to read it, why did three muslim men actually set fire to the publisher's building? I'm not trying to get into a religious debate, but am just trying to understand why such extreme violence can come from people who haven't even seen what they are rebelling against.
It might be my limited understanding of Islam, but is it offensive to merely write the name of a religious person, or something similar? If not, why would they do this? The article also mentioned the Danish cartoon about Mohammad, which caused fifty (!) people to be killed. I can understand if they are offended, but why the need to murder people because they've offended someone?
I'm just confused.

This is what religions do to stupid people. Sad but true.

They feel it threatens their existence/way of life. Think of something that would motivate you to act the same way.
Sadly they have been brainwashed by religion, but it obviously gives them a way of life they value above everything else.

This is simply an issue of people who are close minded. If something may be offensive to you, you destroy it before it is created, a simple preemptive strike. It is also possible that politicians and thought police with their own hidden objectives convinced the common people to do their dirty work for them.

Remember this:
Being offended is a CHOICE.
Muslims have the highest rate of being offended by anything because they CHOOSE to be.
I cannot respect that.

It's because most of the muslim inhabitants of countries where the government suppresses the population are ignorant as to what the Koran actually says, as a lot of their "holy men" only tell them what they "need to know". On top of that, their governments use every opportunity to spread anti-western propaganda.
Muslims in western countries who actually know what the Koran says and yet protests a simple book, are closeminded biggots. Honor-killings? No problem! Suicide bombers? No problem! But a couple of cartoons displaying their prophet and a book about his child wife? RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE!

@67,167> Muslims have the highest rate of being offended by anything because they CHOOSE to be.That sure is a funny line to read on a website where pretty much everyone agree that paedophilia isn't.

There's some argument that people can be mentally predisposed to be religious, but not to any particular religion. They still chose to be muslim.

@67,167> Remember this:> Being offended is a CHOICE.> Muslims have the highest rate of being offended by anything because they CHOOSE to be.> I cannot respect that.I think it's also funny that other religions experience this as well, especially christians. Look at hardcore christians in the US and other countries. They are the reason there are stupid laws like TV censorship exist. Christians are the most likely to be offended at nudity, profanity, etc, and also the most vocal. The politicians pander to them because they are vocal in large numbers.
So if the USA is the most powerful country in the world, politicians who control it are controlled in turn by christian groups because of their voting power, could it not be said that the world is mostly operated by christians? I also find it stupid that politicians who are christian feel the need to state it in public frequently during their time in office (trying to hook themselves to the christian voters), and then offer their own opinions about being offended.
E.g.: the Australian Prime Minister, whatever his name is, was "disgusted" by "revolting" images of a twelve year old girl topless which was a piece of art by internationally-acclaimed artist Bill Henson. So, he is christian and is offended/disgusted at something normal people aren't, and has the power to rush into being a knee-jerk law of some sort preventing this "offensive" stuff. What a complete fuck.

A lot of people in the Middle East come from low-class, rural, lifestyles: ideal breeding ground for religious conservatism. They don't have much in life save for their God and their icons. When they see well-to-do Westerners mocking their closely held icons, then they take that personally as not only an affront to them, but to God. It's easy for us to say, "It's just a cartoon," but Muhammad is a very holy figure to Muslims and is one of the few assured and constant things in their lives. Think of it this way: have you ever seen Castaway? That volleyball, while just a simple toy, became something more to the guy, who had literally nothing going for him. It's the same thing in the Middle East. I don't have much, but at least I have my God.
This kind of conservatism perpetuates itself even higher in the social classes of the Middle East. You'll get a lot of rich oil sheiks spouting religious shit, but they'll still get prostitutes, smoke, drink, spend cash like, well, oil sheiks. Practical religious conservatism wanes as income increases. It's the same here. All those super preachers shouted fire and brimstone, but when in private, they spend their time fucking their male prostitute and smoking crack.
