You wasted your money, you will never use this computer to its fullest potential, or at least not before the same computer can be purchased for under $5000. Particularly when it comes to the blu-ray burner.

I completely agree that it is a horrendous waste of money, what I am try to ascertain is if I'm psychologically disordered in some way? Oh, on another point, it will be used to it's fullest when I benchmark the hell out of it and shove my scores in others faces.

Yes, you have e-penis disorder.

I completely understand what you're going through, however it is quite likely you will have buyers remorse and never ever purchase such a machine again.

Still, I don't mean to bring you down. It's a fine machine in every aspect apart from failing in value to power ratio.

From a mental and emotional pooint of view, you probably did this to fill some hole with material possessions. I'd say that it isn't a big deal so long as it doesn't interfere with the rest of your life (like if you made that much money every couple of hours), but since this is more than you have spent on a vehicle then I think that ship has sailed.

Yes. Imagine what $14,000 would be worth in 10, 20 or 30 years if it was invested instead of wasted on a computer.

Yeah, I mean $14,000. At this time I'm making around 35 to 40k a year, I already own my own home which is fully paid for, as well as 2 vehicles. Even though it may not seem like it, I'm very good with my finances and only had to get a $5,000 dollar loan to purchase this, as I had already saved the other 9k. I'm 21 years old and my occupation is farming.. lol yes farming. Life is very, very dull where I live and the main purpose of this machine will be to fill the void in entertainment in my area. But also it might be for other reasons.. IDK. Thank you for you're responses anon, but I would just like to hear one other anon agree that this is awesome and would do the same thing as I just did given the chance.. ? Anyone?

Well… in that situation, I can understand wanting to buy "the best". I have personally never owned "the best" of anything (usually the next cheapest or the cheapest)…

You will not really use it at its full potential unfortunatley. It would be a perfect piece if you were building an intelligent house but still … 14,000 $ is way too much money for a computer. You could haver used that money for a trip somewhere in the world, or for sex I don't know.

@67,827

What difference would it make? The issue at hand is still the psychological condition of someone who would buy this and whether or not it is a bad idea. Besides, what reason is there to lie?

It sure looks like the best gaming PC money can buy at the moment. You just need to be very sure about it. You're buying a Skulltrail mainboard, which is very exotic. Does it support SSD's? I don't mean "does it have SATA connectors so you can connect SSD's", I mean: will you be able to run SSD's on it as if they were regular SATA disks.

Are you sure RAID0 (which is ridiculous anyway) on SSD is properly supported? What good is your lightning array if it breaks after every unclean shutdown?

Have you read Tom's review for "all" VGA's of Q3/2008? (http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/gaming-graphics-charts-q3-2008/benchmarks,30.html). Apparently SLI only works in a few games because of driver optimisations needed per game. In some other games it performs worse than a single card. Granted, you can probably configure the nVidia driver to enable / disable SLI automatically depending on the game run. 3 cards just seems silly to me though.

And finally, to get back to the Skulltrail board: it's exotic and extremely expensive so only a handful will be sold since it's more a proof of concept / showcase of Intel's cutting edge technology. How long will they support it? With drivers I mean, so everything still works on Vista SP2 or Windows 7.
Just something important to keep in mind.

If you're going to use this only for gaming, it's like burning money: a $ 3000 computer that's replaced every 18 months (still insane ;)) will perform just as well the first 36 months and probably better after that.

Also, what's with the 2.1 speaker system? :P

You could have built a computer of comparable performance for much much less if you purchased mid level parts and overclocked them. A total waste.. You are an idiot.

And if you're going to spend $14,000, get more than a 24 inch monitor and 2.1 speakers for fucks sake.

.. ah haha i'm already feeling buyers remorse over this purchase. But, it's to late to look back now. As for the monitor only being 24", I have just bought a monitor for my current computer a couple of months ago which is a 30" and very nice, so I planned on just swapping the 2. The speakers, although they are only 2.1, are very nice and work for me because I will not setup a surround system anyways. My room in which I keep my computers is not really a good place for it. The computer I'm on currently was just purchased from Alienware last october. I did as many anons have said, and bought mid to high level parts with it, and OC'd as needed. But I am already experiencing visual lag and bad fps on some newer games. This is mabye the main reason why I decided to go all out and purchase the newest possible hardware. I know it will not take long for games to advance enough to make this new system obsolete in my opinion. But dammit, I want to be able to fully crank up any game, add any texture mods.. etc. to it, and play them without a hint of the computer having to work to show me the visuals. I'm so fucking tired of not having the best, so that's why I did this. And yes, I realise some of the problems with the selection of "exotic" parts, but hopefully you're fears are unfounded. All I can do is cross my fingers and hope that the future will be good and I don't have to beat my computer down. {once upon a time, I bought a dell. the dell was a piece of shit, never buy one. I reached the point where I was so upset with it, I got my baseball bat out of the closet and beat the living hell out of it on my living room floor. somehow, I managed to get a bad gash in my left thumb while throwing it out into the yard. therefore, i have a scare on my left hand as a reminder of how pathetic dells are… and i am i suppose}

It's gonna be a long time before that shit's obsolete. I couldn't bring myself to spend more than 2000$ on a computer, but I guess if you need 8GB ram and 1.5TB hard drive space.. go for it. Still a waste of money IMO.. I doubt you will use the computer to its fullest potential.

That's a big lol, did you put it on a credit card or take out a loan? By the time you pay that shit off the computer is going to be mediocre at best.

Also, enjoy shoving those frame rates in peoples faces when you realize that there is no difference in game play from your 14k computer to their 2k computer.

I laughed out loud.

I wouldn't have taken out the loan for it. Getting a loan for things that depreciate isn't so smart financially.

Moron, it's Fully Buffered Ram, that's much different than regular Ram. FB-DIMM can easily compete with DDR3, POSSIBLY be better though that is quite argumentative. It's just not as well supported as DDR3 is. I don't expect noobs to know what FB-DIMM though.

Honestly this is just a server motherboard attempted for gaming. OP you are nothing short of retarded; not only was this a colossal waste of $14,000 which you would probably never even utilize half of what you have, you probably could have built this sucker for a few grand cheaper yourself.

I'm so jealous of you, OP, but for the wrong reasons. I'm a Game Art & Design major, and I'm just dreaming of having a computer like that. I could paint massive works in photoshop without any slow down, I could render super detailed scenes in 3d studio max… I could sculpt billion-poly models in Zbrush. I could render post with after effects in real time….

Anyway, you did waste your money. Games barely use 2 processor cores anyway. You would never actually use your 8 cores unless you had like 8 copies of world of warcraft open.

In three to four years' time there will be stuff out better than this that is under $1500 total. You're a total idiot for spending this much on a computer which is full of brand new technology that will doubtless never be expanded upon because the developers don't think it's good enough. Plenty of things won't even run on it because it's too future-tech, and plenty of future things won't run on it because it'll be different technology.

As for insane, no. I think you're just having a stupid moment or a midlife crisis.

My advice right now would be to cancel the order and instead get yourself a $2000 rig that will run games easily as well as this rig does - that is, the max system hog games out in the next year at max settings. Get a 9800, a dual core 3GHz CPU or so. 2GB of RAM, XP. A normal hard drive since fast ones sound like powerful fans trying to take off. With a 9800GT and a powerful CPU etc, you'll still get that feeling of an extremely powerful PC. Because it is. Splash out even more if you like. Just don't spend $14k.
