In the USA, "rednecks" are generally considered to be found in the southern states. Who's ever heard of a northern state redneck?
In my country, the "rednecks" (or the people with a similar personality) live way up north. Does this mean that it could as well have been the northern part of the USA that would turn into "redneck" states? The climate doesn't seem to matter…
(I don't mean "redneck" in a bad way.)

"Rednecks" are tied to ruralness mostly.

We got some rednecks in the central New York. There's plenty of farms around us.
(P.S. Central New York means like the Syracuse area, not in the Big Apple)

@67,925Oh, we have some Amish around us. It always makes me laugh when I see their buggies tied up next to the local K-Mart.

I believe that it is. I didn't grow up in the country but I've moved there with me sister. My neighbor always tells me how her cousins want to go out with her. Also she thinks that a riding mower is a tractor and she has a bunch of fucked up old cars on her property. I have never seen or heard about any of this from people who grew up in towns and cities. And that's why I say, yes it is related to geography.

Well, in the truest sense, a heavy population of rednecks essentially means that there are farms in the area, since the term originated from how farm workers often had red necks (due to sunburn). The redneck personality probably arises from the low population. When there aren't many people in an area, you tend to know everyone around you. The farming lifestyle requires people to be spread out, so this sense of community is developed. The best farm land is where the rednecks tend to be, perhaps? In that case, I suppose it's tied to climate.
