Topic: I hate it when people go off-topic in on-line discussions…

Like if somebody (me, in this case) wants to talk about ads on the Web and how annoying they are, somebody always tells me about "AdBlock" (some sort of software plug-in for a specific Web browser). What? I didn't ask for a way to block ads. I wanted to talk about the ads and why they are served in the first place. Ignoring and blocking things out isn't the solution. It sure as hell doesn't explain anything…

I wish people would just stick to the topic.

Offering a solution is usually how people solve problems. The solution can also be a hint at why the problem exist, because there are some things that are created simply to force you to use the "solution" provided elsewhere.

If someone was complaining that they couldn't perform a certain task (reading an article) due to something like ads, I think it would be perfectly reasonable for someone to suggest a way to eliminate the problem. Unless you just wanted to complain about how you couldn't perform the task, and has no intentions of fixing it.

@68,163

"Fixing" it? How does an unreliable, short-term hack solve the problem?

(See… this discussion is no longer on-topic.)

Or the person wants to talk about how to stop the problem from being created instead of talking about how to solve it after it has been created. But that would be kind of a moot point if a viable solution exist, which is how most people view problems and thus view the existing solution as the end of the topin in online discussion.

I like mango chutney. Any one else with me on that one? :P

…Joke. I half get you, but maybe a little pedantic?
