Topic: How to network as a professional artist. (subtopic how to remember names)

I'm a digital artist at the skill level of a generalist. I know how to do rudimentaries of everything from 3d modeling & animation to digital painting/conceptart and I'm quite social with my friends and co-workers. However, sad to say, none of my friends are going anywhere with their careers and I want to meet new and more goal oriented artists, but I'm coming up short.

I've tried contacting artists via email, online sites (deviantart, cgtalk, cgsociety etc etc etc) But more often than not, I'm just one of many random internet people and they assume I'm just some anime-drawing fanboy who just wants more page views on DA.

There's only 1 Visual Effects company in my state and they suck bad. So that leaves out walk-ins or getting to know people in person. So I ask you, how can I start to make friends/contacts/networks in the industry without actually having access to meet them in person. And secondly, it takes me forever to remember someone's name. I'll remember who they are and what projects we've done together, but I can never come up with a name. How can I remember a name the first time I hear it?

It's simple. You need to move somewhere populated, like a city for instance. I go to an art school in a fairly major city, and I don't think I'll have a problem getting a job here.

I go to all of the major studio crawls around here and I know a lot of people. I've already been asked if I was interested in an internship (it was my second semester and I wasn't ready for anything on a professional level).

Hope this helps,
Anon.

Thanks for the reply. I was afraid of that as I've heard terrible things about living in LA/hollywood area. The whole consumerism thing doesn't really jive with me. I just wear whatever and do art. I think I'd get lynched for the kind of crap I wear.

Maybe siggraph next year…any other art conventions?
