Except you don't get paint on you? How do you know that you've been hit? How do others see it?

Yes, it basically is. You know you've been hit because the section of the armour lights up and makes noise.

I've played it before. And I had no idea what was going on. I thought i was doing good, but apparently I was doing bad. I would much rather go paintballing.

In laser tag, you wear a vest system that detects hits from other guns. Under normal conditions, the vest will give off mild lighting accompanied with your team's color flashing on the vest. When you're hit, your vest usually "powers down" and prevents you from firing. During this time, the lights on your vest will shut down, allowing you to escape without notice and hide until your vest "powers up" again (usually after 5 seconds).
Most laser tag game systems are quite customizable. Owners can create many different unique "game modes" and change the properties of the vest and gun. For example, it is possible to change the gun from automatic fire to semi-automatic fire. It is also possible to eliminate all lighting on the vest, and when combined with turned off lights in the arena, create a stealth action game.

You wear a sort of vest with sensors on the chest, back, and shoulders. I've heard of some places that also have helmets or something, but I've never seen them. A laser that gets shot at you hits any one of the sensors, and the vest tells you you've been hit. In at least the places I've gone, it keeps you from shooting for about 5 seconds, or you're forced to go back to your base. That's how you know you've been hit.

this is one key difference between laser tag and paintball though… laser tag is extreamly gay. You pretty much run around in a dark crowded room shooting flashing lights at each other.

Laser tag does have it's merits. It's a helluva lot cheaper and cleaner than paintball or airsoft. It's a nice thing to do if you want to play some casual wargames or something. And it's easier to get people in (like girls and weaklings) to play with you.

Laser tag isn't supposed to be as painful as paint balling, although once I ran into my friend during laser tag as we both came around opposite corners and I knocked a bit of her front tooth off with my gun. She bawled like a baby. Bad times.

I get too much into laser tag sometimes. One time, me and a friend got too close to each other after rounding a corner. We immediately swatted each others' guns away and began grappling each other into the ground. We desperately tried to bring our guns to bear on each others' suits, but I won out in the end. Just as he was about to position the gun on my suit, I slammed it up into his chin. I then got up into a kneeling position, one hand aimed my gun at his body, and blew a fucking hole in his chest execution style.
Sometimes laser tag suits have an optional photon attack (usually 3 per game). Basically, you press a button on your suit, and your gun sprays out "lasers" in a huge cone. It can basically clear an entire room of opponents instantly. This is useful when you play against little kids, cause there will be like 15 of them crammed in a fucking bunker spraying ungodly amounts of fire in every direction. You sneak in, hit the photon, and power down everyone's suits simultaneously.
If there aren't photon attacks, then there will probably be shields. You hit the button, and become invincible to fire for 10 seconds or so.

My main gripe with it is; how exactly do you avoid people just leaning around a corner with head + gun and being impossible to hit? It just seems like there wouldn't be any aiming in laser tag (or there wasn't the time I went, years upon years ago). You just spray and pray like you're switching channels on a TV.
…
That can't be right anymore. How good is laser tag in terms of actually aiming for their armour in a straight line to hit them? How possible is it for faggots to keep their armour in cover and shoot you?

Laser tag is aimed through the visible red laser light you see when you fire. It may or may not be accurate, I haven't paid much attention. The general rule is that you can't have your visible laser beam more than a few inches away from the target, or it won't hit. It seems to be quite precise. To address the head + gun problem, most laser tag systems are setup so that it is possible to score a hit on the gun. So even if a guy hides his whole body, you can still score hits on his gun if he exposes it.
It's not really a big problem where I sometimes play. The players won't deliberately try to be faggots and cover their guns and armor, or spam shit everywhere. It usually takes too much effort to cover up your armor, then cover your gun frame as well so you can't be hit at all. The guns are usually set on semi-automatic as well, so spamming doesn't work to well. It forces players to aim as opposed to spamming automatic fire.

You can't even see the "laser" firing, because it uses infrared wavelength lights. -_-
So, paintball is 100x better than laser tag. What's even better is using rubber bullets and real firearms in woods with friends.

Yes you can, there are two systems at work. A visible red laser light that helps you aim, and an invisible infrared light that actually hits the target.
My whole point is that whether or not paintball, airsoft, or laser tag is better depends on your situation. Paintball is more fun than any of the two, but it is also much more expensive and messier. It's also harder to find someone that wants to play paintball as opposed to airsoft or laser tag.

The problem with laser tag is people easily cheat by blocking the receivers on the vest or helmet. Can't do that with paintball. Plus, you know when you hit someone with paintball because they scream from the pain.

The gun acts as a receiver. You can stick your head out and not get shot, but that doesn't do much good unless you want to fire. As soon as your gun is exposed, it can be hit. If the gun didn't act as a receiver, than it would be a serious flaw.
