Topic: Can homebrew but not distill?

By the laws as I understand them in the USA. I can homebrew beer/wine/mead/ect up to about 200-300 Gallons a year for my own consumption.

But I cannot take that beer/wine/ect and distill it at all for consumption. At all. Period.

From what I understand I can distill things to make fuel, but not for consumption. Whats the deal, is this all about liquor tax? I cant see it being for any other reason.

In before dangerous still's, wood alchohol poisioning. Going blind ect.

Law making bastards… That's probably just it, it's all about the tax. Ever notice how cheap metho is compared to even the shitest vodka? It has more ethanol in it by far and is still cheaper, but the trick is you don't have to pay the same taxes buying it because it contains methanol (an irremovable poison). Perhaps you could make booze for drinking, but put something in it so that it is undrinkable when they come to see how much you have and claim that they can;t count it as part of your yearly limit.

@69,351

The blindness is a result of methanol poisoning, and was often only developed because some cunt of a moonshine producer decided it was safe to "water down" his alcohol with methylated spirits or didn't know to discard the first how ever many ml of whatever he was producing. It is very easy enough to produce your own booze safely at home, despite the myths.
