Topic: what's the difference between chubby and fat?

Anonymous 35097c939d5ee9ce5c975ad47eee383b started this discussion 2 months (2008-10-12 09:58:50 UTC) ago:

the reason i'm asking is because i see pictures of girls who are skinny(hell, some to the point of asian girl skinny) and they're being referred to as chubby but then i see another picture of a girl who has to be over 280lbs and is being referred to as chubby.

do you determine as like, clothing size? i was referred to as being chubby when i was a size 5 and then i put on weight and was a size 9, someone called me fat. of course, i am also short with wide hips, so maybe that is why.

Well, I'll give you an honest answer. First of all, let me note that I'll use the terms as I understand them to apply to girls. The lower bound of "chubby" is when a girl could obviously stand to lose a few pounds. Not just a little beer-gut or some cellulite, but a good 10+ pounds of extra weight (depending, of course, on bone structure and height).

How long you remain "chubby" before moving into "fat" territory depends a lot on your physiology. Basically, being "chubby" is a negative characteristic, but not a deal-breaker. Being "fat", however, means that with respect to at least that one physical feature, you are actually sexually repulsive. "Fat" chicks have back-boobs, or large, protuberant bellies (so that you can't really imagine lying on top of them without your body conforming to it), et cetera.

Usually, I think "fat" tends to start at around forty pounds overweight, but I'm actually not that good at judging people's weights based on their appearance, so I could be wrong.

Size 9 is fat???
What the frak is wrong with that person.
Stupid, skinny obsessed culture.
/rant off

I would generally agree with the first responder tho as to the "definitions" of the words.
Chubby can mean fat, but not too fat to be undesirable. Or it can me having just enough fat to be cute. Generally speaking, chubby isn't usually bad. (Although, I've heard it applied to very large people, too…)
Fat is unattractive.

Therefore, it's all in the eye of the beholder. And trust me, some men like "ruebenesque" women and would never call them fat.

But trust me. Unless you are 4' 3" a size 9 isn't even close to fat.
