I am obligated to side myself with my homeland, Michigan, by choosing the New United States of America.

NCSA for the win. We'd probably be able to negotiate a merger with Texas — strong common set of cultural identity, there.
California, though, really ought to be its own nation. It's already got a huge fucking economy, and it's quite culturally distinct from the Midwest.
If it comes to a war, though, the Allied states as they stand will win. They've got the California economy, which is damned close to the size of the whole NUSA's economy. Plus, the flyover states have almost all the nukes.

Sweet — I now realize that I am the President of These New Confederate States of America. The NCSA is going to be based on (surprise, surprise) a loose federal system with very strong state's rights. Powers of the federal government of these Confederate States will be restricted only to those enumerated in our Constitution. Thankfully, that still makes me Commander-in-Chief.
I declare that the seat of our federal government is now in Atlanta, Georgia (since that's where I am). So now, in order to make policy, I need the representatives of the several states to post so that we can vote on policy. Representatives of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Southern Kentucky, Virginia, Carolina (that's right, we're merging them) and Florida, report in!

@68,973nice idea…I mean Atlanta is one of the largest Metro areas on the world…it would be interesting to make into a Federal district and IIRC wasn't that (or was it Birmingham AL) the first CSA capital? not sure.
also OP I would have a LOT more factions. Deseret, Cascadia, Republic of California, etc…
also its Second American Civil War too ;)
