I'm looking for a desktop environment for Windows because 1. it's stupidly hard to manage the icons on the desktop (and i have way too many) 2. i want multiple workspaces 3. i want to use the area of my screen more efficiently

Any suggestions?

If I may ask, exactly what kind of environment are you talking about? Big, small, what's up?

The only real thing that I can suggest to you is folders. Folders are your friend, and they help clear up space on the desktop when needed. So, say you have shortcuts to all Microsoft Office programs: just make a folder, title it "Microsoft Office Shortcuts," and drop all the shortcuts in there. It doesn't take as long as Start, Programs, Microsoft Office either, so that's always good.

Also, check your resolution. In most cases, you would want to set your resolution to the highest possible. This actually adds space to your desktop, as smaller resolutions tend to "blow up" things a little - make icons larger and so on.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Thanks for the reply

I don't use folders because I like to have everything organized on my desktop in a way that I can 1. see what I have installed atm 2. find things fast without having to think about it

My resolution is max (1680x1050 :D)

But err yeah I still don't know which DE to try :/

@69,187

Blackbox and its many mods/offshoots are the only good free ones. Heavily customizable.

For real multiple workspaces, try: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/cc817881.aspx

Create custom toolbars. Hide them until you mouse over and keep them on top of other windows. That way you can clear your desktop and still access some icons without minimizing windows.

Also, multiple desktops all have the same icons…only difference is the windows that are open…it doesn't work like you think. That would be cool though but doesn't exist AFAIK.
