I always think about this when I see TV shows. I assume that they ask about permission to capture video and sound of the store/whatever from the owner, but what about the customers?! I would run in the other direction if I ever saw a TV crew approaching…

Not really. If a local store is filmed, people start talking about it, and if people start talking about the store, more customers will go to that store. It's really good for publicity. For instance, some store in my home town was filmed for a movie once, and people were talking about it years later.
