Let's say, we can't just have two types of laundry detergent.. we have 6-7 different brands, with different consistencies, and each brand has at least 3 fragrances to chose from. Ah, capitalism.

Where exactly do you live? The USA is actually not the most varied in their food flavors. Places like Japan and Taiwan have many, many more flavors of a certain food than US foods. They even do this with foods originating from the USA. You'll find stuff like restaurant entree themed potato chip line ups and fifteen different varieties of flavored milk. Movie theaters in Taiwan will serve two different type of popcorn, kettle and traditional.
