Topic: What does the "Donkey" in Donkey Kong mean?!

He's not a donkey… he's a gorilla or some other sort of big monkey! Donkey Kong? WTF?!

I heard it was orginally acalled Monkey Kong then when writing out some contracts for the game or something someone misheard the wored Monkey for Donkey and it was then called Donkey Kong

Dunno if that's really tru that's just what somebody told me.

Miyamoto wanted to characterize DK as being a stubborn character. He obviously took Kong from King Kong, and then used donkey to represent stubborness, as they're often characterized as stubborn animals.

I read in an interview with him printed in a book that he looked up stupid in a Japanese-English dictionary and donkey was one of the entries.

It is mentioned here, but only as a possibility. It seems a little too precise to just be a theory to me, but whatever. Other explanations mentioned in this thread appear there as well.
