In this passage:
Upon initially viewing this image, my eyes were immediately drawn to the bars covering the holes of the tree, making it seem like a cage. However, I found it weird how the bars were trapping nothing but a bright light emanating from behind the tree.
Should the first period (after 'cage') be changed to a semicolon, or are the two similar thoughts grammatically & correctly able to be in two separate sentences?
Also, should the second "the tree" be omitted, replaced with "it", since it can be seen as redundant?
Thanks!

1. "Upon initially" is redundant.
2. Forget the semi-colon and omission.
