Topic: Pedos/hebes: would you do 100% anonymous university research if it existed?

Anonymous c63b238234d2944ca9ca9f52987a91a1 started this discussion 1 month (2008-10-14 08:04:45 UTC) ago:

Just curious… If a university offered pedos and hebes the chance to be in a 100% anonymous research project online (online text-based chat room, only you and the researcher chatting), would you do it?

No IP recording, no personal details, fake names, no emails, proxies allowed, maybe Tor, perhaps even done in any internet cafe you want or on someone's unsecured wi-fi, and the participants could guarantee their own anonymity and would have it in writing from the university, there's a very thorough ethical clearance and they can call the university to confirm that the research is real… and any other measures you want… What personal safety/anonymity issues do you think would still exist? Would you be able to be open and honest to someone who genuinely wants to know your side of the story if your anonymity is guaranteed?

The reason I'm asking: I'm going to be doing a PhD soon and I'm trying to work out if this set up would help people feel safe enough to participate. Almost all other pedo/hebe research is done on prisoners or psychiatric patients, which doesn't represent all pedos and hebephiles, and the research is very one-sided. Is there a way to make this work so we can understand what's going on inside you and what it's like to be in your shoes with a clear, non-biased mindset?

Another idea… perhaps participants can set up the chat room and control it… More control, more assurance that their anonymity is guaranteed.

Excellent PHD topic. I would do it. I wouldn't be worried about anything as I live alone and don't break the law. Others may not be so carefree, however.

Why not plan to run the chat/survey through Anontalk? It seems to be populated by pedo/hebes that already trust the place.

Thanks :-) The actual research is still probably two years away, since I need to review a LOT more literature and develop my research questions, but I'll definitely consider it :-)

The number of potential topics is infinitely broad at the moment, but one thing that fascinates me is the hysteria surrounding ephebophilia and hebephilia (after all, aren't these just attractions to the secondary sexual characteristics which have caused sexual attraction in the first place for millions of years?) and studying the differences presented in the discourses of pedos/hebes and groups like government, anti-pedo groups and society-at-large.

I often like to play "devil's advocate" and when I started thinking about pedophilia/hebephilia not as things that are evil/taboo/disease/stuff to be eradicated and took a social science perspective, I found there are people who genuinely seem to care for the children, place their well-being above their own sexual needs, and so forth, which is a phenomenal difference to what the government, activist groups and society seems to think. It leads me to believe that there's probably a very large gap in our knowledge which creates an atmosphere of fear and reactionism. I wonder if society thought of pedophiles and hebephiles as people and not evil boogey monsters, perhaps the "problems" might be solved. I think there's a major obstacle to this though: there's a whole industry devoted to the CSA (Child Sexual Abuse) line of thinking which results in them getting funding (a lot) to think up ways to punish people who can't help their attractions, including barbarism like castration of all things. The CSA way of thinking is all-pervasive, and I think I'm taking a risk with my research reputation by playing devil's advocate here. The researchers, social workers and other CSA "industry" participants seem to be people who genuinely want to do good, but their line of thinking is really tightly bound to their self-identity and self-esteem, so no matter how good my scientific approach or results are, there are some who will feel personally threatened.

The current way of thinking about pedophilia and hebephilia is predominantly from a psychology viewpoint (it's a mental disease, how do we treat it?), a legal viewpoint (how can we prevent pedophiles from acting on their sexuality through acts of law?), a social work viewpoint (how do we treat victims and what treatment systems can we build?), and to a lesser extent, a biological viewpoint (what physiological phenomenon causes pedophilia?). To ask about how a pedophile/hebephile feels, and even to view these attractions from a totally neutral perspective incites disbelief. I've seen others called "sympathizers", closet pedophiles, and "evil" because of it.

Otherwise, I might feel inclined to make the pedophile/hebephile the unit of analysis and perhaps investigate their side of the story in-depth. What meaning they place on their feelings, how their feelings present themselves in daily life, and what the consequences are, how their lives differ from non-pedophiles/hebephiles.

I find it somewhat sad that not only does this knowledge gap exist, but individuals with these attractions can't act on them (whether it is right or wrong is not the question, it's just that most societies won't allow them to act on them), can't seek social support because of social opinions, can't even seek professional support because of the high risk of arrest or forced psych evaluation, and seem to have compounding problems as a result. It must be a terrifying way to live. It's also interesting that a few have started writing about "coming out" like gay people have done.

I thought that the results of this might pave the way for an anonymous hotline to be set up for pedophiles and hebephiles to just chat to psych interns without them judging them, trying to treat them, or get them arrested. Just someone to listen. In exchange, this hotline would help researchers understand pedophiles and hebephiles better.

I see many big gaps in these fields, and I can't seem to narrow it down to one I want to focus on, but that's still to come.

Now, for the inevitable complaints from those on anontalk who want to link my comments with support of pedophilia, take note: I don't condone acting as a result of these sexual attractions, but I do condone seeking to understand it and providing fellow human beings with support and understanding even if I don't agree with the way they are or think.

Wow, I wrote a lot. Sorry for boring you!

also, OP something I forgot. pedophilia was removed from the list of mental illnesses in the early 1970s.

Also OP you should also try the central tor site, some other onion sites, and 12chan (And lolicon baords on chans)

oh yes…I've gotten that in arguments on sites. Have to lol as people automatically assume I'm a pedo because I side with them…

Sorry I had to use some shorthand. A "hebephile" is someone attracted to people from puberty to adolescence.

A truly unbiased study on "anonymous" pedophiles? Quaint! Good luck with the funding! Be sure to sneak in a paragraph or two on the long-term physiological effects of porn from the Internet on the reptilian brain, it may give you a better insight on the human condition than would abetting the Us versus Them status quo regarding MAAs. If you are going to have subjects who already identify themselves with an orientation, then the subjects fall into the same category as the prisoners; the only difference being that the subjects in your study self-identify, whilst the prisoners were identified that way by society. What would come of such a study? You already know who the "perverts" are and nobody wants to "understand" those people. My plan would call for applying the same questionnaire to subjects from all walks of life. A truly unbiased study would be something on the level of a Kinsey scale, turning the very idea of orientation on its side. Applying that principle to the entire pool of subjects, exposing all of them repeatedly to the same random stimuli over a short term: a woman blowing a horse here, people fucking inanimate objects there, the occasional child model, with plenty of non-sexual imagery in-between. Use a chimp as the control and count how many times it masturbates. Throw in an EKG or a polygraph and be done with it. Admit it or not, the results of such a study would provide that rare glimpse into the primal aspects of human sexuality that people from all walks seem to share. This may lead to open doors for more research and better understanding, less prisons, more jobs…oh, look at the time. Gotta go read up on the latest fictitious missing child story!
