Topic: How do you handle seeing a semi-dead bird outdoors?

Last summer, there was a dying bird laying next to my mum's house. I felt really sorry for it, but I didn't dare to kill it (and how would I do that anyway?). It probably had a painful, slow death as a result of this. Or actually, somebody else probably took care of it since it was gone when I came back later. But still — I just ignored the poor creature.

It was like… breathing, but it apparently didn't have any chance of surviving. I don't know. I'm no expert. It must have fallen victim to the local cats or something.

What should I have done? Yes, it's "natural" and "circle of life" and all that shit, but I feel really sorry for things and animals and people…

I'd pick it up and get it some treatment at an animal hospital or similar.

It was just a bird FFS.

Whenever i see a half dead animal if i don't kill it within the first 3 seconds of seeing it, i cant do it. I have to do it quickly, partially because ill need to make sure I kill it quickly, and if i don't ill look into it's eyes. I can't put it out of it's misery if i look into its eyes.

I would only kill it if I was sure it was going to die anyways or if it was suffering.

What I mean is this. Say you see a squirrel with a front leg so mangled you know it's never gonna heal properly. You might as well kill it to end the suffering.

One time I found a red-tailed hawk that had been hit by a car. It's wing was obviously busted up bad, but I couldn't catch it. So I called around and found someone with a phone book, and got a trapper out there to get it, took it to a former zookeeper turned bird rehabilitator. Her house was awesome. She had all kinds of rare birds in her back yard recuperating from all kinds of weird crap. It turned out the hawk had to be put to sleep, but not because of the wing, but because of some internal damage.

You never know. The lady had another red-tailed hawk that had also been hit by a car. She gave it to me to release out by my parents' house. It was sad, but also kinda cool.

Mercy is always the best option, even if it means ending their suffering.
Just put yourself in their place and think about what you would want others to do.
If I ever become a vegetable, smother me with a pillow please.

I once had to remove a dying bird from my dog's mouth. It was probably close to death, I believe its back and/or neck was broken, perhaps in multiple places. In the end I decapitated it with the blade of a shovel to end its suffering, and buried it. That was quite possibly the hardest thing I've ever done, but I couldn't bear to let it suffer any longer.

@70,309

And hope that God kills a kitten that's already dying?
