Topic: OK. Seriously. Paint.NET and GIMP are simply SHIT!

I have tried to use them both for a long time now, but they aren't even playing in the same universe as Adobe Photoshop. They're like pre-pre-Alphas of Photoshop 1.0. It's horrible!

Is there no other free alternative?

Hmmm. I rather like GIMP. I agree that Photoshop is still a little more powerful because of its wider range of plugins, but it doesn't blow GIMP out of the water like it does Paint.NET. They're definitely in the same league.

However, I ought to disclose a couple of things:

(1) I don't do graphic design professionally. I can make some reasonably good-looking stuff, but I don't do it for a living.

(2) I got started with graphic design on GIMP — I'm actually far more comfortable with it than with Photoshop. The biggest complaint that I hear about GIMP from others is that the interface is poor — but to me, since I never knew anything else, it doesn't seem that bad.

Anyway, I can do anything that I might ever need to do in GIMP, so I refuse to use any proprietary competitor. GIMP, of course, will only continue to get better, while remaining free, so Photoshop is ultimately doomed, anyway. Thus, I don't want to waste time developing Photoshop skills.

On the other hand, if I were a graphic design artist, I guess I'd have no choice but to use Photoshop. To do otherwise would be like trying to be a diplomat without knowing English.

That is absolutely not why I like Photoshop. The UI is not only polished, but it's a total must to work sanely with text.

I don't do "graphic design". I do pretty basic things and still can't stand the obnoxious, shitty UI of those two free alternatives…

I'd have to agree, I've tried using GIMP on several occasions, and I just cannot stand the UI. I never had this problem with any of the photoshop-type software series (Adobe or Paintshop). I could just get on and start doing work, there wasn't any learning involved when using those programs.

Paint.net isn't really SUPPOSED to be "in the same league" as, or a replacement for Photoshop. It's basically Microsoft Paint with actual features that people want to use. It's meant to be easy, quick, and lightweight.
