Topic: What grinds my gears: People who call the USA "America"

Anonymous 3731d51273739033b0b4d237e31a3e8b started this discussion 1 month (2008-10-15 14:50:49 UTC) ago:

America isn't the USA. The USA is a country in the continent North America. North America alone has the two other major countries Canada and Mexico in it, as well as many tiny islands and shit (I think). And then we don't even consider South America…

"The Americas" and "America" aren't the USA. Stop this horrible inaccuracy!

Oh, and "Americans" should be referred to as "USAians". I'm not joking…

I know the differences between the two, however if your presidential candidates can refer to the USA as "America" then I can too.

It is an accepted variation, and not the same as calling England "Europe".

'USAians' sounds horrible. If you think of a reasonable alternative then I'll side with you.

Fine — so long as the Brits can adapt to being called UKians.

Seriously, this is a stupid thing to bitch about. If it changes, it will happen on its own accord. Right now, the U.S. economy and military might is greater than all the rest of the hemisphere combined. We are America, and for a century we have dominated the internal politics of the other states that happen to be on our continent and shaped them to our liking, with a few embarrassing exceptions (Cuba?).

You naysayers should take heart, since it appears that the current set of U.S. presidents and candidates (yes, I'm including Obama) are perhaps actively trying to destroy us by ruining our prestige and reputation in the world, particularly with Europe. The U.S. has by and large been an admirable country. There have been lots of exceptions, but our country has one of the best track records for being on the right side. The unilateral "let's get the turrists" policy (whether in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, etc.) is ruining the country far more effectively than actual terrorists ever could.

So, would you like a geographical term for referring to people residing in this hemisphere? Try "North American" or "South American" or "Central American". People will immediately know that you intend a geographical, state-inclusive classification. If you just say "America", though, people think that you are using a political term — and the U.S. is' the whale in the swimming pool over here.

The UK is not the same as Britain which is not the same as England.

The UK consists of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Britain, or Great Britain, is the largest of the British Isles, which has the capital cities of England, Scotland and Wales on.
England is a country.

Yeah, that's a point. I agree with above guy. If you are going to be pedantic, then you may no longer call England "UK" or "GB"
America used to be part of Great Britain, and Canada, and France, and Australia, and loads of other countries.
The British Empire.

For this reason GB is no longer an applicable term as we gave most of the empire away for some stupid reason, so now, UK is more accurate as the GB empire is only in the UK now.

And obviously we then can divide the countries within.

Call it what you like, but I will still call the USA America.
Take it as a compliment.

When I hear "Great Britian" it reminds me of the awesome that we once had.
We pwnd just under half the world.

(Americans, you guys can be proud of this too as your ancestors were British (English) at the time, however, the British Americans killed the natives, which sucked.)

No offence of course. Just another perspective.

Stop being so pedantic. Obviously, everyone realizes that North America is not the USA. It's just the way things came to be, and how they came to be called. It's more accurate to call the USA American than it is to call it something else simply because everyone does so. If you tried to use a more "accurate" name for it, you'd end up confusing everyone with your more "accurate" name.
