I thought one of the features of HTTPS was that it was necessary to communicate directly to the server…?

There is no such thing as "directly to the server" over the internet - there are always routers between you and the server.
If the proxy works on a low level, like a NAT router, https will work over it.

Ah, sorry, missed that. Well, it would probably do a man-in-the-middle; it would connect to the target, while you connect to it. Your https connection would only exist to the proxy.
