Topic: Someone help me get back at Apple.

Anonymous A started this topic 9 months (2009-07-03 01:33:?? UTC) ago (#28,783):

I fucking hate Apple (the company, that is). I won't go into details why. That's besides the point.

Anyways, I was thinking of ways to pull shit at my local Apple store (that would be their flagship store, the 5th Avenue, NYC one). What I thought of is I could overclock a laptop to some insane, strenuous speed and have the computer totally melt, or overheat. My mom has a Macbook, and even without overclocking they heat up pretty rapidly… so I think with a little (or big ;-)) push, I can make something happen.

The question is — how do I overclock a Macbook? Is there a BIOS? I've only ever done overclocking via the BIOS, but I know there's software to overclock "live", is there an equivalent for OS X? Help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Exactly, one of the reasons I hate them.

Don't hate a company for its users. Also, if you actually succeed in melting the Macbook they will just replace it with a new one. And chances are they will see you overclocked it since everyone that works at Apple knows quite a lot about Apple computers. Even if they don't there is still a big chance you're going to have to pay for it.

I'm pretty sure they're not actually going to give a shit if you melt one laptop at one apple store. They probably won't even notice. There's very little you could achieve by doing this, besides getting yourself arrested.

Do what you want though.

Ah he wants to mess with a computer from the store. You won't get away with that I'm afraid.

You've obviously never been to this store. It's always crowded, and people pull all kinds of shit. I saw someone walk up to a computer, take an unsuspecting persons iPod, and walk away, just like that. They would not notice if I used a computer, and then it overheated a few minutes later.

OP, it cannot be done.

Macs indeed have no BIOS, unfortunately you will not be able to install any new software on a Mac at the Apple Store because all installation of applications are password protected by an administrator.

Apple trumps you once again.

Apple computers use EFI, and that only has a command line.
There is open-firmware as well, but I don't know much about that.

They both require restarting the computer.

@172,062

I've actually compiled a hack from milw0rm.com allowing me to get 'root' access onto any Mac (running OS X): http://www.milw0rm.com/exploits/8266

It was relatively fun to put into such an easy solution: I just plug the thumb drive in and bam, I can get root access, passwd any account, etc. I don't even need to run it off a flash drive: I can just download a prepared "disk image" from wherever I choose to put it online.

I would even go as so far as to share this exploit with you, if you wish. The code does nothing malicious but give you root control of the computer.

Now with that established, can anyone help me with this?

This is closest thing I've found to overclocking on a Macbook Pro, to be fair I didn't really read all of it so I'm not sure of it's capabilities or how it works.

Try going to the apple store with a bunch of boot discs that display hello.jpg or the pain series. Just surreptitiously pop them into each computer. Hopefully no one will remove the disc before the next time the computers are restarted. Next time the computer is turned on someone from the Apple store gets goatse'd.

Macs don't boot the cd by default.

This sounds like a moderately insane and useless obsession. Isn't there something more productive you could use your free time for?

Why ruin a computer to demonstrate against them? Just stand in front of the store in a protest like fashion and educate people on the prices, freedoms, features, etc. of PCs compared to Apple's offerings. This is legal and will have a much greater effect.
