Topic: In Adobe Illustrator, what's the difference between the diameter of the brush and the stroke weight?

They're both telling you the diameter of the mark you'll make, right? So what's the difference? Also, they both have the same dimensions (length), and I observed that changing either one will change the width of the stroke you make. So what's the point/ why are there two/ what's the difference?

Then how do I know the actual diameter I get? Why can't I just have one thing for the size of the mark being made, instead of it being related to two things? There must be a rational explanation… So far it just looks like a way to make stuff more inconvenient.

Thanks for your info, though.

It's the same as in physical art:

Stroke refers to the amount of pressure applied to the canvas.
Diameter refers to the width of the brush.

Stroke will only affect the diameter if you apply too much pressure.

Alright… Fair enough. So, say I want the output to be 4 pixels across, what can I set the brush diameter and stroke weight to to guarantee this?

Use the pen tool to make a line and then stick a 4pt stroke on it.
