Topic: Does job = life?

I am waiting for college and people have told me I need to get a life. I've also been told I need to get a job. I don't "need" a job. But having one would prevent me from being a "lifeless" person. Do I desire having a life anon?

Your job is simply what you do. It isn't who you are. Some of us are fortunate enough to have been able to follow our dreams and do what we love to do. Many more have not and are stuck in a career or field that they hate, but keep at it because of varying responsibilities they have.

A lot of people may have heard the phrase: "Do what you love and the money will follow" Most don't have the faith or vision to walk that path.

Odds are you will change careers 2 or 3 times in your working life, maybe more. I'm pushing 50 now and am getting ready to embark on yet another career.

Just watch out that what you love is not something that will disappear- all I want to do is fly airliners. Look at the cost of oil. I still hope that some magic ullet will appear, but I'm not betting 70k on it.

@18,738

I'm actually risking the money.

Who is telling you that you need to "get a life"? Why should you have to conform to their beliefs on what constitutes normal living?

I got a job delivering pizza as a kind of first job. Shit job, shit pay but the people were cool and dealing with the public really improved my confidence and I think made me a better person socially.
I was at uni and it kind of helped motivate me to do assignments and other things I needed to do in day to day life. Definitely a good thing for me.
Later I had a sales job that made me feel like I'm a pretty boring useless person and it pretty much drained my confidence away.
I think some jobs really will give you a life but some will drain the life out of you.

Find the right job for you and it really will help you along lifewise, even if it has nothing to do with your planned career / gives you shit all money / you know what I'm talking about.
Find a job that makes you feel shitty and you'll be stuck living alone with your parents the rest of your life.

Life ≠ Job

"I think some jobs really will give you a life but some will drain the life out of you. "
This is definitely true, and when you start feeling like your job is a pain, DO SOMETHING BEFORE ITS TOO LATE. or you'll suffer depression.
