I'm a foreigner and i always wondered whether the word roomate only applies to the people who you share the same room in a dorm with, or it can be used when you refer to people who you live with in the same flat or apartment which is independent from school. I hope it made sense.

roommate (plural roommates)
1. (UK) A person with whom one shares a room, as at university etc.
2. (US) A person with whom one shares an apartment or house (UK: flatmate or housemate).
