Topic: What if you forget your PC laptop's power-on password?

What do you do if you ever forget the power-on password to your ordinary PC laptop? With a normal, stationary box, you can just relatively easily open it up and remove and put back the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS settings…

With a laptop, you're basically screwed?

Just hack it and bypass the password and then reset password. Easier done than said - yes. Easy.

You can't hack it if can't execute any programs… you could manually 'hack' it, of course, by manually inputting every word in the dictionary, etc.

I don't know shit about PCs, but if you're running XP, try searching YouTube for Windows XP Password or something along those lines. Should be as simple rebooting with a disc and resetting the password.

Obviously not, considering what you just said…

i suppose it depends if you partitioned the hard disk?

i always do that. windows on c: and everything else on d:

but i'm sure you set an overall admin password when you install xp originally so if you don't set a password for that you're laughing. just don't ask for specifics on how to access the admin. maybe start in safe mode?

I don't know if it really works, but you could try using a password cracker LiveCD, like Ophcrack (http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/).

> Ophcrack is a free Windows password cracker

Sigh. This has nothing to do with Windows and it happens BEFORE any CD is read anyway.

You are all fucking morons. He's talking about a password directly inputted into the BIOS. As in, the first thing you're prompted for when you start up the computer. No operating systems. No shitty freeware brute forcing programs. No nothing. And no, it's not stupid considering that the passwords to accounts on any operating system are pretty easily cracked.

Some laptops will lose their CMOS settings if you remove the main battery. Yet others have a CMOS clear switch or jumper hidden somewhere — check your manual. Failing that, you can usually take the laptop apart and disconnect the CMOS battery with relative ease. If you don't want to take it apart (e.g. still under warranty) your only recourse most likely is to send it back to the manufacturer.

you are all retarded.

whoever makes your laptop, call them. they can remove the bios password.

i know this because i sent my hp laptop into repair once and when it came back the bios password was gone. all they do is unscrew the back panels and trip a circuit. just search online
