Topic: Sometimes I think that people troll AT deliberately to scare smart people away

Sysop started this discussion 3 months (2008-07-03 16:22:55 UTC) ago:

When smart people see only/mostly dumb replies to a smart OP, they likely conclude that this place is full of retards and go away. Very frustrating…

If you are not trolls, you need to stop being such dumb, lazy fucks.

Nah, that's too subtle for real trolls to get any pleasure from it. They're just morons.

I don't understand people who don't put any effort into their posts. That's why I could never get into Retardchan — what's the point of spending time posting on the internet if you have no interest in real discussion or self-expression?

scenario;

you spend much time and effort crafting a reply on a site such as this.

sysop has stroke, loses mind, gets killed, hit by meteor.

site disappears, you get permabanned, internet explodes in fiery armaggedon.

you've wasted your time.

the internet is fleeting, shifting, and transient. it usually does not earn much time or attention or effort.

those who are 'scared off' by aimless nonsense will probably not come here and contribute anyway. those who are intelligent and capable of reasonable discourse will not enjoy being lumped in with the rest in a semi-constant rant from sysop.

it's a quandary.

I like this site and try to speak humorously if not reasonably. the retarded nature of some replies doesn't frighten me at all, nor does it disturb me.

I do think a wordfilter changing 'loli' to something less chanmeme-like might help matters slightly; but it really makes no difference. the IQ here is unlikely to shift much.

'the average man is really stupid, and half of them are even dumber than that'

trolls troll because they feel good trolling, that’s all.

as nietzsche would say, “evil” people are not trying to fuck YOU. no one cares for YOU at all. everyone is just trying to do stuff they want, and you happen to be in their way.

@30,329

I understand what you're saying, about how the internet is transient. But personally, I get a certain satisfaction from crafting interesting, thoughtful or at least well-written posts. The thing I don't get is people posting useless things like "GTFO faggot" and such — it's not even a good insult, just a waste of everything. Why even bother taking the time to read a thread and post something like that? The way I see it, if I'm going to waste time fucking around on the internet, I might as well get something out of it — even if I make a thoughtful post and it's ignored by others, I've still expressed myself in a meaningful way.

And anyways, you can apply that to everything, because everything is transient. Why bother having a casual conversation with anyone in real life? They're all going to die, you're going to die, the Earth will be destroyed, the universe will reach "Heat Death" or whatever the latest end-of-days theory is. So what's the point? Because it's enjoyable to interact with others, or because you have nothing better to do. And if you have nothing better to do than talk to people on the internet, you might as well put something into that, even if only for the satisfaction of expressing yourself. You can learn things about yourself from any kind of writing, even brief forum posts, if you put some kind of serious energy into it.

And they get a different kind of satisfaction from mindlessly posting “no u” and such. That’s all there is to it.

I know, and that's what I don't get. Who would get enjoyment from posting that kind of shit? These people are like small children, preferring repetition over novelty. It's just beyond me.

Ever seen “taggers” who get a kick by writing their names in public monuments and art pieces? Same thing. Ruining things is a way of validating yourself when you can’t create them — at least it was *you* who ruined it.

I'm resisting the strong temptation to post 'tl:dr' right now.

the internet is more transient than traditional media.

you can compare it to a casual conversation, whereas printed media is more like a planned speechbor debate, worthy of greater investment in time and energy.

sometimes gtfo faggot no u is the appropriate and hilarious response to someone's inflated ego and masturbatory prose.

Ignoring > hilarious response. A response will only make people feel they must defend their position and continue to post egotistical and useless drivel.
