I was always told this in school in English class: "In England, everyone is very friendly and they find it rude if you don't include 'please' in nearly every sentence." (Or something along those lines.)
USA: "One beer."
UK: "One beer, please."

A couple weeks ago, I was waiting in a queue next to some brits, and one of them managed to get the word "summat" into each fucking sentence.
Still don't really understand what it actually means though - some bastardization of "something"?

Yes most people say please here. I notice when people don't so it is probably uncommon. But it's ok to substitute other words instead. "2 stellas cheers" for example.
